Authentic Pilates

What is Pilates?

Originally named Contrology by its creator, Pilates is a system of movement designed to coordinate the mind with the body. Breathing, centering, control, coordination, precision, and flow are the 6 principles Joseph Pilates underlined in his work.

Easy on the joints, Pilates is an intense program that focuses on strengthening "The Powerhouse" (the "core" or "center") while simultaneously lengthening the limbs and spine.

It can be done on apparatus or mat, in either a private, semi-private, or class setting.

Who can do Pilates?

Pilates was created by a strong athletic man, so while many think it's only for women, this couldn't be further from the truth!

Excellent for athletes, Pilates improves balance, alignment, and agility. It also sharpens the minds ability to concentrate and focus.

Gentle on the joints, Pilates is very affective for individuals of advancing years or those suffering from arthritis, injury, or recovering surgery. The exercises are rejuvenating by nature.

Pregnant women can both prepare for labor and rebound back to their "pre-baby" body.

Pilates alleviates and prevents the common lower back and knee pain associated with pregnancy and can be very helpful throughout the process.

Those who sit all day at a desk or behind the wheel of a car will improve their posture and find they don't fatigue as easily.

Housewives, couch potatoes, young and old, male and female…anyone.

It is not recommended that children under the age of 16 do Pilates as their spines have not fully matured. However, if a child is an active athlete or dancer, Pilates can be very safe and helpful in their development.

Why Physique Pilates?

Over time, much of Joseph Pilates work has been lost in translation. Devoted to upholding his vision, Physique teaches in the original style…old school, but informed by present day awareness.

Trained and certified by Romana Kryzanowska, Petie Russo (Physique Owner & Instructor) has been teaching authentic Pilates since 2001. She was featured in Romana's DVD's Optimum Weight Management, and has since then gone on to open two studios of her own, and is still convinced that the best way to practice Pilates is the authentic way.

All Pilates is not created equal... let your body be the testament to that!

How can I get started?

Pilates can be done in 2 forms: on apparatus or on the mat. Both incorporate the same principals of movement. Apparatus classes are done in a private setting, whereas mat classes are done, traditionally, in a larger group.

It is usually best to begin your Pilates journey with at least one private session; this will allow both you and the teacher to get to know your body, the way it moves, and what your particular goals should be.

However, if you've taken Pilates before, it is quite fine to jump right into a mat class. You will be guided step by step, and modifications will be presented as needed.
